General fire-safety guidance
01

Home fire prevention

Store gas safely

Keep LPG cylinders upright, outdoors or in a ventilated area, and check hoses for leaks.

No bush burning

Open burning can spread quickly in dry weather. Clear bush safely without fire.

Keep matches away from children

Store matches and lighters up high, out of children's sight and reach.

02

Smoke alarms

Test smoke alarms

Press the test button every month and replace batteries at least once a year.

Fit alarms on every level and near sleeping areas. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for battery and alarm replacement.

03

Cooking safety

Never leave cooking unattended

Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or boiling. Turn off the stove if you step away.

Keep towels and packaging away from heat. Never use water on a cooking-oil fire. If fire spreads, leave immediately.

04

Electrical safety

Don't overload outlets

Avoid daisy-chaining extension cords. Unplug appliances that are not in use.

Replace damaged cords and stop using appliances that spark or overheat.

05

Escape plans

Plan your escape

Know two ways out of every room and agree on a meeting point outside with your family.

Keep exits clear and practise your escape plan together. Choose an outdoor meeting place.

06

What to do in a fire

Stop, Drop and Roll

If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face and roll.

Leave immediately, keep low beneath smoke, and never go back inside. Call the fire brigade from a safe place.
